Completes the two pieces deferred from the first workspace-hints pass.
`zellij run --purpose X` / `zellij action new-pane --purpose X` tag a pane at
spawn time, which is what an agent wants for panes it creates itself; the OSC
wrapper still works for programs that declare their own role. Not supported with
--in-place, which replaces another pane rather than being a pane of its own: clap
rejects the combination rather than accepting a flag that would do nothing.
`tab name="work" purpose="agent-work"` gives a whole tab a role, reported by
`list-tabs --json`. It rides the tab's ROOT layout node, reusing the pane field
because a tab's root is the tab container and never itself a pane -- asserted by a
test for the tightest case (a tab holding exactly one pane), since a leak there
would silently mislabel a pane.
The interesting part is why the flag first shipped broken. There are TWO protobuf
boundaries -- the plugin API and the client->server IPC contract -- and a CLI flag
must cross the second one. Defaulting the field in the conversion (what "no
protoc" usually forces) compiles cleanly and then silently drops the value in
transit, so --purpose parsed, printed a pane id, and did nothing. Fixed by adding
the field to both contracts by hand, in the .proto AND the committed generated
prost, kept in lockstep so a future regeneration reproduces it: protoc is only
needed to regenerate, not to build. Both boundaries now have a round-trip test,
and the IPC one was confirmed to fail when the wire read is removed.
Sanitising moved to Grid::set_authoritative_purpose, the single choke point every
out-of-band source passes through, after the CLI path was observed delivering
`bad purpose; rm -rf /` intact into list-panes --json.

Implements the zellij half of sl0p/workspace-hints-proposal.md: a pane can carry
an opaque agent-facing hint for what it is FOR, so a project can ship a layout
that an agent is able to navigate instead of guessing.
zellij never interprets a purpose. The consuming agent owns the entire vocabulary,
which is what keeps this to one string threaded along the existing status_bar path
rather than a policy engine, and lets the vocabulary change without a rebuild.
Two ways in, because declared panes and agent-created panes are different:
layout: pane name="server" purpose="dev-server"
in-band: printf '\033]5577;1;purpose;agent:build\033\\'
The second exists because tagging at spawn time would mean threading a field
through 28 SpawnTerminal call sites, and a new action variant is impossible while
protobuf enums cannot be regenerated. Wrapping the command costs one printf.
A declared purpose outranks an in-band one and cannot be overridden or cleared by
it. OSC arrives from whatever the pane happens to be showing, so otherwise a
`cat hostile.txt` in the human's editor pane could relabel it as the agent's
scratch pane and invite an agent to run commands where the human is working. A
layout is written by a human in a file they can read; in-band data only fills a
blank.
Exposed on PaneListEntry (`list-panes --json`) rather than PaneInfo, which crosses
the plugin protobuf API we cannot regenerate; resolved in the screen thread where
panes live rather than via route.rs's per-pane PTY round-trips. Values are
sanitised to a bounded [A-Za-z0-9_.:/-] token at both entry points, because a
purpose is never rendered -- it is matched against and pasted into consumers'
shell and JSON pipelines.
Verified end to end rather than by inspection: purposes from a layout appear in
list-panes --json against the right pane ids, an agent-spawned pane tags itself,
a declared purpose survives an in-band override attempt, all of it comes back
after kill + resurrect, an unknown pane property is still a parse error, and a
layout with no purpose leaves dump-layout unchanged.

`status_bar_button_style "indexed"` renders `1:Approve 2:Reject` instead of
`[Approve] [Reject]`, so the bar doubles as a key legend for a harness that binds
alt+1..9 to the same actions.
A config option rather than a protocol field: whether the numbers mean anything
depends on what the USER has bound, not on what the program knows. It needs no
wire change and so no version bump, and the click report still carries the id --
never the index -- so a program is unaffected by which style is in force.
The style is threaded into layout_status_bar, the one function the renderer draws
from and the hit-test resolves against. That is what makes this safe: changing a
button's rendered width necessarily changes its clickable span too, verified by a
test asserting span width equals the drawn width and that every drawn column
resolves back, for both styles.
Also fixes the web client's Style construction to read the option from config
rather than defaulting it -- my first pass claimed that code had no pane_frames
config available, which was wrong; it uses it two lines further down.

Second slice of the status/action frame. A program declares buttons, and a click
is reported back to it:
printf '\033]5577;1;buttons;approve:Approve;reject:Reject\033\\'
-> click -> program's stdin receives OSC 5577 ; 1 ; click ; approve ST
The report is a FIXED format carrying only the id, never bytes the payload chose,
and ids are restricted to [A-Za-z0-9_-]. The sequence that creates a button is
in-band and untrusted -- `cat` of a hostile file emits it as readily as a
cooperating program -- so a click that could send arbitrary bytes would let
viewing a file inject into the stdin of whatever is running, a shell included.
Labels are '%'-escaped since the wire format is ';'-separated, and both the
button count and id length are capped because the list lives as long as the pane.
Positions come from one layout_status_bar function that the renderer draws from
and the hit-test resolves against. Computing that geometry twice is how the
stacked-pane picker once selected the wrong pane; a test asserts every drawn
column resolves back to the button drawn there, across 100 widths.
Two things the drive caught that unit tests could not:
- The first delivery path pushed onto grid.pending_messages_to_pty, which is
only drained when the PANE produces output -- so a click on an idle program sat
in the queue forever. The write now happens at the tab level, which owns the
senders.
- The hit-test derived the frame row from the pane's raw geometry, but this fork
draws the frame inset by gap_offset, so with `gap 1` every click missed by one
row. It now derives from the CONTENT rect, which is by definition the inside of
the drawn frame and therefore the same columns the renderer lays out.
Buttons serialise with the session like the status text, so a resurrected pane
comes back with its buttons intact.

Collapsing and expanding a tab from the default layout stranded the status bar
halfway down the screen, and left the collapsed stack three rows tall.
A synthesized layout describes only where the user's panes go. Applied bare, it
laid out EVERY pane in the tab -- including the status bar, which became an
ordinary grid cell. Real swap layouts do not hit this because their `tab` node
is expanded with the default tab template, which carries the pinned plugin
slots; a layout built at runtime has to take those from BASE instead.
Synthesis now builds into the tab's own structure: the first non-plugin leaf
becomes the stack or grid and inherits its size, further content leaves are
dropped since the replacement accounts for every pane itself, and plugin panes
keep their slots and sizes.
Falls back to the bare replacement when there is no content slot at all -- a
layout of nothing but plugin panes would otherwise be returned unchanged,
silently dropping every user pane. Found by the test, not by the drive.
Only reproducible with a layout that has plugin panes, which is why the
quaddie.kdl drives never showed it and the default layout did immediately.

A `children` placeholder inserts every pane it receives as a flat sibling.
That single hardcoded policy is why a layout can only express "N equal
columns", "N equal rows" or "one stack" without hand-writing a variant per
pane count -- the max_panes=5 / max_panes=8 / max_panes=12 ladders in a swap
layout file exist purely to work around it.
`pane arrangement="grid" { children; }` builds a tree for N panes instead.
Two to start: grid (ceil(sqrt(n)) columns, rows filled left to right) and
master-stack (one 60%-wide master, the rest beside it).
Generates a TiledPaneLayout rather than geometry, so everything downstream
works unchanged: split_space, the minimum-size feasibility check,
LayoutApplier, swap-layout damage tracking, and the responsive collapse. It
composes with that last one for free -- a grid is simply infeasible on a
narrow terminal, so it is skipped and the collapse takes over.
The arrangement builds ONE self-contained subtree rather than splicing a
variable number of nodes in among the placeholder's siblings, so it stays well
defined next to the pre-existing "children node with sibling nodes" TODO
rather than leaning on it.
Like default_fg/default_bg, the field has no protobuf representation, so it is
defaulted at both plugin-API boundaries and does not survive a round trip.
This is why it is a field rather than a LayoutConstraint variant: a new enum
variant would have no representation when converting TO protobuf, and the
committed prost assets cannot be regenerated here (no protoc).
The 48 snapshot updates are the new field appearing in TiledPaneLayout debug
dumps (324 lines, all `children_arrangement: None`). No snapshot content was
removed. The `expression:` metadata churn in those files is pre-existing drift
that regeneration swept up: the stored snapshots recorded the expression
before normalize_layout_debug was introduced.

* feat: add Windows signal and process implementations
- AsyncSignalListener: polls crossterm size at 100ms, tokio ctrl_c/break/close
- BlockingSignalIterator: SetConsoleCtrlHandler + AtomicBool, polls size at 50ms
- signal_process: GenerateConsoleCtrlEvent for Interrupt, TerminateProcess for Kill
- Add windows-sys workspace dependency
* feat: add Windows IPC support with named pipes and marker files
- ipc_connect/ipc_bind/ipc_bind_async helpers with cfg gates for named pipes
- Dual-pipe architecture on Windows: main pipe + reply pipe per connection to
prevent IPC deadlock (half-duplex named pipe limitation)
- is_ipc_socket returns is_file() on non-Unix for marker file discovery
- ipc_bind creates empty marker file after binding named pipe on Windows
- assert_socket split: cfg(unix) probes with ConnStatus, cfg(not(unix)) returns
true to avoid deadlocking the server accept loop
- Replace tokio UnixListener/UnixStream with interprocess tokio Listener/Stream
in web server IPC for cross-platform support
- Add interprocess tokio feature to workspace deps
* feat: add Windows client support for input, server spawn, and stack size
- Two-mode Windows input: crossterm event reader for native console,
termwiz byte parser for terminal emulators (VT input mode)
- cast_crossterm_key: convert crossterm KeyEvent to KeyWithModifier
- ENABLE_VIRTUAL_TERMINAL_INPUT on Windows stdin for raw VT byte reading
- Skip ANSI terminal query on Windows to unblock startup
- spawn_server: CREATE_NO_WINDOW | CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP on Windows
- 8MB stack trampoline in main() for Windows (default 1MB overflows)
- 8MB stack for server worker threads (WASM compilation needs it)
- Enable crossterm events and bracketed-paste features
* test: make tests cross-platform for Windows
- Socket tests: cross-platform IpcGuard/IpcName helpers with GenericNamespaced
on Windows vs GenericFilePath/TempDir on Unix
- Layout tests: normalize_layout_debug() replaces backslash separators in Debug
output on Windows; gate env_var_expansion test with cfg(unix)
- Setup tests: use PathBuf::join + display() instead of hardcoded / separators
- Server OS tests: cross-platform command helpers (long_running_cmd, echo_cmd,
stdin_reader_cmd) with CREATE_NO_WINDOW on Windows
- zellij_exports: replace GenericFilePath with ipc_connect() helper
* ci: add Windows build and test jobs with debug logging
- Add build-windows job: cargo check --no-default-features on windows-latest
- Add test-windows job: cargo test --no-default-features for utils/server/client
- Enable manual workflow_dispatch trigger
- Add debug log::info! calls in server startup, plugin loading, PTY spawning,
and screen layout application for troubleshooting
* feat: implement Windows stubs for shell, command hooks, and process listing
Replace unimplemented!() stubs with working Windows implementations:
- get_default_shell: reads $COMSPEC, falls back to cmd.exe
- run_command_hook: uses cmd /C with RESURRECT_COMMAND env var
- get_all_cmds_by_ppid: uses sysinfo to enumerate processes by parent PID
* feat: implement Windows daemonize_web_server with detached process spawning
Replace the `unimplemented!()` stub with a proper background process
spawner that mirrors the existing `spawn_server` pattern: launch a
foreground `zellij web --start` child with CREATE_NO_WINDOW |
CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP, poll the TCP port to confirm it's listening,
then exit the parent process.
* feat: implement native ConPTY backend for Windows PTY
Replace all WindowsPtyBackend stubs with a full ConPTY implementation:
- CreatePseudoConsole with overlapped named pipes for IOCP-based async
I/O (zero extra threads on the read path per pane)
- CreateProcessW with PROC_THREAD_ATTRIBUTE_PSEUDOCONSOLE and proper
UTF-16 command line quoting / environment block construction
- ConPtyAsyncReader with lazy promotion from OwnedHandle to tokio
NamedPipeServer (reactor not available at spawn time)
- Per-terminal exit monitoring thread using WaitForSingleObject
- ResizePseudoConsole for terminal resize, WriteFile for stdin,
TerminateProcess / GenerateConsoleCtrlEvent for signals
Note: for PROC_THREAD_ATTRIBUTE_PSEUDOCONSOLE, the HPCON value must be
passed directly as lpValue (not a pointer to it), matching the C
convention where HPCON is void*. In Rust (windows-sys) HPCON is isize,
requiring an explicit cast. See microsoft/terminal#6705.
* chore: remove debug logging from ConPTY backend
* fix: resolve Windows plugin directory and WASI mount errors
Two Windows-specific fixes for the plugin system:
1. Replace colons with underscores in URL-derived plugin directory names
(e.g. "zellij:tab-bar" -> "zellij_tab-bar"). Colons are illegal in
Windows path components, causing OS error 123 on plugin dir creation.
2. Use FILE_FLAG_BACKUP_SEMANTICS when opening directories for WASI
pre-opened mounts. Windows requires this flag to open directory
handles, otherwise File::open() returns OS error 5 (access denied).
Both fixes are behind #[cfg(windows)] — Unix behavior is unchanged.
* fix: enable mouse support on Windows native console path
Mouse events were silently dropped in the crossterm event loop, and
enable_mouse() wrote VT escape sequences that don't set the required
ENABLE_MOUSE_INPUT console mode flag. Add from_crossterm_mouse()
converter, InputInstruction::MouseEvent variant, and use crossterm's
EnableMouseCapture/DisableMouseCapture on Windows.
* fix: Windows get_default_shell() now checks $SHELL before $COMSPEC
* fix: resolve bare command names via PATH and PATHEXT on Windows
CreateProcessW doesn't reliably resolve bare command names (e.g.
"pwsh") through PATH the way Unix execvp does. Additionally, the
existing command_exists() check didn't consider Windows PATHEXT
extensions (.exe, .cmd, .bat, etc.).
Add find_executable() and resolve_command() which search PATH with
PATHEXT support on Windows, and use the resolved absolute path when
spawning via CreateProcessW.
* chore: run cargo fmt --all
* fix: canonicalize expected paths in setup tests for Windows \\?\ prefix
* fix: Windows CI test failures in spawn_and_read_output and snapshot test
Use cmd /K instead of /C in spawn test so ConPTY has time to flush
output before the pipe closes. Normalize backslashes in snapshot test
to handle Windows path separators.
* fix: strip redundant Shift and AltGr modifiers from Windows key events
On the Windows native console path, crossterm reports physical modifier
flags alongside the already-translated character. For example on French
AZERTY, Shift+ù produces Char('%') with SHIFT, and AltGr+_ produces
Char('\') with CTRL+ALT. These extra modifiers cause keybinding
mismatches and prevent modified characters from being typed in plugin
text inputs.
Strip Shift for all Char events and Ctrl+Alt (AltGr) when the character
is printable, matching Unix terminal behavior where only the resulting
character is reported. Also fix raw byte synthesis for AltGr characters
to emit plain UTF-8 instead of ESC-prefixed sequences.
* fix: detect and clean up stale Windows sessions via PID-based liveness check
Write server PID to marker files instead of creating empty files.
assert_socket() on Windows now reads the PID and checks process liveness
via OpenProcess, cleaning up stale marker files for dead sessions.
* fix: connect reply pipe on Windows for kill-session and delete-session
On Windows the server blocks on reply_listener.accept() after accepting
the main pipe connection. Without a reply pipe connection, the route
thread is never spawned and the KillSession message is never processed.
* fix: wait for server Exit response in kill/delete session on Windows
The previous fire-and-forget approach was unreliable: the client would
disconnect before the server's route thread had time to read and process
the KillSession message. Now we wait for the Exit response on the reply
pipe, ensuring the server has fully processed the kill before we return.
* fix: resolve Windows console mode race between VT input and mouse setup
Two threads race over SetConsoleMode on the stdin console handle:
- stdin_handler calls enable_vt_input() (read-modify-write)
- input_handler calls enable_mouse() via crossterm's EnableMouseCapture
(full SetConsoleMode overwrite to 0x0098)
Depending on ordering, crossterm could clobber ENABLE_VIRTUAL_TERMINAL_INPUT
(breaking the VT byte reader), or enable_vt_input could preserve
ENABLE_QUICK_EDIT_MODE (intercepting mouse events at the console level).
Fix enable_vt_input() to explicitly set the exact console mode needed
(0x0298) instead of read-modify-write, clearing QUICK_EDIT_MODE and other
line-editing flags.
Fix enable_mouse()/disable_mouse() on the VT path (TERM is set) to use
ANSI escape sequences instead of crossterm's Console API, avoiding the
competing SetConsoleMode call entirely. Enable ENABLE_VIRTUAL_TERMINAL_PROCESSING
on stdout first so ConPTY forwards the DEC private mode sequences to the
terminal emulator.
* fix: session-manager plugin kill session on Windows dual-pipe IPC
The plugin's kill_sessions() only connected the main pipe and sent
KillSession, but on Windows the server blocks on reply_listener.accept()
before spawning the route thread. Without connecting the reply pipe the
message was never processed.
Add the same dual-pipe handling as the CLI kill_session(): connect the
reply pipe first, send the message, then wait for the Exit response.
* fix(windows): replace resize polling with event forwarding from stdin thread
Forward crossterm Event::Resize from the stdin thread to the signal
handler thread via an mpsc channel, replacing the 50ms polling loop.
This makes terminal resizing much more responsive during mouse-driven
resizes and eliminates wasteful polling when idle.
When the VT reader path is active (terminal emulators with TERM set),
the sender is dropped, causing the signal handler to automatically
fall back to size-polling — preserving existing behavior for that path.
Unix is unaffected: handle_signals receives None for the receiver and
BlockingSignalIterator continues using signal_hook as before.
* fix(windows): enable ANSI terminal queries on the VT reader path
The startup ANSI query mechanism (pixel dimensions, colors, sync output)
was blanket-skipped on Windows. The actual limitation is specific to the
native console path, where crossterm's event::read() uses
ReadConsoleInput (INPUT_RECORDs) and never reaches the byte-reader loop
that parses ANSI responses.
On the VT reader path (terminal emulators like Alacritty with TERM set),
fill_buf() reads raw VT bytes via ReadFile — same as Unix — so ANSI
query responses work normally. Move the use_vt_reader decision earlier
and use it to gate the query, enabling it for the VT reader path while
still skipping it on native console.
* fix: handle early TerminalResize before client is fully registered
On Windows, enable_mouse()'s SetConsoleMode call can generate a
WINDOW_BUFFER_SIZE_EVENT that arrives as a resize before the server
finishes processing the initial client connection. At that point
set_client_data() hasn't been called yet, so set_client_size() silently
no-ops on the None entry and min_client_terminal_size() returns None.
Instead of panicking, skip the resize when the minimum size can't be
determined — the server will query the terminal size once setup
completes.
* fix: remove unnecessary custom stack size
Early versions of zelilj windows port crashed with stack overflow.
Increasing stack size allowed proper startup and moving further with the
porting effort. Current implementation no longer suffers from stack
issues, so we can revert back to default stack size.
* fix(windows): re-enable Ctrl+C handling inherited by ConPTY children
The server is spawned with CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP, which disables
Ctrl+C for the process. Children inherit this disabled state, so
ConPTY child processes (shells, ping, etc.) silently ignore
CTRL_C_EVENT signals generated by the pseudo-console.
Call SetConsoleCtrlHandler(NULL, FALSE) early in start_server() to
clear the inherited ignore flag before any ConPTY children are created.
* refactor(windows): move inline cfg(windows) blocks to platform files
Break out inline #[cfg(windows)] blocks from shared client code into
the existing _unix.rs / _windows.rs platform files, per upstream
feedback.
- Split spawn_server into two #[cfg]-gated function definitions
- Extract setup_ipc, enable_mouse_support, disable_mouse_support into
os_input_output_unix.rs and os_input_output_windows.rs
- Unify BlockingSignalIterator::new() signature across platforms
- Extract native console stdin loop into stdin_handler_windows.rs
* fix: remove sporadic info log statements
* ci(windows): add Windows x64 release builds and upgrade CI
- Add Windows x64 target to release.yml for both normal and no-web
release matrices, with NASM, static CRT, .zip packaging, and
PowerShell checksum steps
- Upgrade build-windows in rust.yml from cargo check to cargo xtask
build, add wasm32-wasip1 target and NASM
- Add build_release() function and platform-aware e2e_build() to
xtask/src/ci.rs
- Add BuildRelease command definition to xtask/src/flags.rs
* refactor(client): make resize channel unconditional across platforms
Create the resize mpsc channel on all platforms instead of gating it
behind #[cfg(windows)], avoiding conditionally-existing variables that
are hard to follow. On Unix the sender is immediately dropped and the
receiver is passed as None-equivalent to handle_signals.
* refactor(windows): restructure signal iterator with if/else for channel vs poll
Consolidate the quit check at the top of a single loop and use if/else
for channel mode (native console) vs poll mode (VT reader). On channel
disconnect, set resize_receiver to None and continue into the else
branch instead of falling through.
* docs(server): clarify comment about early resize before client init
Explain why min_client_terminal_size() can return None even after
set_client_size(): new_client() inserts None, and set_client_size()
is a no-op on None entries since it uses as_mut().map().
* feat(web): add --server-startup-timeout flag for web server
Make the hardcoded 10-second TCP-poll timeout in the non-Unix
daemonize_web_server configurable via a CLI flag, defaulting to 10s.
* fix(windows): use unique pipe names for ConPTY output on re-spawn
When a held pane re-runs a command or drops to shell, do_spawn tried
to create a named pipe with the same name as the previous spawn. The
old ConPtyAsyncReader still held the read handle, so CreateNamedPipeW
failed (FILE_FLAG_FIRST_PIPE_INSTANCE, max instances = 1) and the
error was silently swallowed, leaving the pane blank.
Add a monotonic AtomicU64 counter to the pipe name so each spawn gets
a globally unique pipe, regardless of whether the previous one has
been cleaned up yet.
* ci(windows): enable static CRT for regular Windows release build
The no-web Windows build already had RUSTFLAGS="-C target-feature=+crt-static"
but the regular build was missing it, resulting in a dynamic CRT dependency.
* docs(web): clarify --server-startup-timeout is Windows-only

Caching the click position wasn't working across multiple plugin
instances.
Also a couple of refactors:
- move the code with the tab switching logic inside update

anyway afterwards

* xtask/pipeline: Fix publish task (#2711)
* xtask/pipeline: Fix publish task
which was previously stuck in an infinite loop after successfully
publishing a crate. The error originated in the code only checking for
error conditions but not breaking out of the inner infinite loop in case
of success.
* xtask: Improve publish failure UX
by offering the user more actions to choose from when an error occured.
* utils/assets: Add generated prost files to assets
to make sure they're available at build time and are picked up by all
components. It seems we hit some strange bug with the build script
where, when running `cargo publish --dry-run` the build script **is
not** run before regularly compiling zellij-utils. This shouldn't happen
according to the docs, but I cannot explain what's causing it. So we're
using this as a workaround for now to make a smooth release.
* xtask: Prevent accidental git commit deletion
when dry-running a publish.
* utils: Add comments to protobuf-related code
to explain why these changes were performed. The comments all include a
link to an issue comment explaining the situation in greater detail.
* xtask: Build protobuf definitions
when building any part of the project, similar to how we build the
plugins when required. This should ensure that all crates built through
`cargo xtask` (which is the officially supported build method) will
receive up-to-date protobuf definitions.

* status-bar: first_line: Use more generic var names
Rename all `CtrlKey...` to the equivalent `Key...` to make the name less
specific. It implies that all key bindings use Ctrl as modifier key,
which needn't necessarily be the case.
* status-bar: first_line: Refactor `ctrl_keys`
Removes lots of code duplication by `Unselect`ing all keys by default
and only `Select`ing what is actually required for a given Input mode.
* utils: conditionally compile unix-specific code
In `zellij_utils`, the following modules each contained code that was
previously targeting only the unix platform:
- consts: Works with unix-specific filesystem attributes to set e.g.
special file permissions. Also relies on having a UID.
- shared: Uses unix-specific filesystem attributes to set file
permissions
These will never work when targeting wasm. Hence the concerning code
passages have been moved into private submodules that are only compiled
and re-exported when the target isn't `#[cfg(unix)]`. The re-export
makes sure that crates from the outside that use `zellij_utils` work as
before, since from their point of view nothing has changed.
* utils: Share more modules with wasm
that work on both wasm and unix natively. This requires factoring out
bits of code in the `setup` and `input` modules into a private submodule
that is re-exported when the compilation target is *not* "wasm". The
following modules are now available to the wasm target:
- cli
- consts
- data
- envs
- input (partial)
- actions
- command
- configs
- keybinds
- layout
- options
- plugins
- theme
- pane_size
- position
- setup (partial)
- shared
The remaining modules unavailable to wasm have dependencies on crates
that cannot compile against wasm, such as `async_std` or `termwiz`.
* utils/input/keybinds_test: Fix import
of the `CharOrArrow` struct which is now part of the `data` submodule.
* utils/layout: Use global serde crate
Previously the code was decorated with `#[serde(crate = "self::serde")]`
statements which cannot be shared with wasm. Use the regular serde
without specifying which serde is meant.
* utils/data: Implement `fmt::Display` for `Key`
so the Keybindings can be displayed via `format!` and friends in e.g.
the status bar.
* tile/prelude: Re-export `actions`
submodule of `zellij_utils` so the plugins can access the `ModeKeybinds`
struct with all of its members.
* utils/data: Fix `ModeInfo::keybinds` type
and transfer a vector of `(Key, Vec<Action>)` to the plugins so they can
parse it themselves, instead of passing strings around. Due to the
requirement of the `Eq` trait derive on `ModeInfo` this requires
deriving `Eq` on all the types included by `Key` and `Action` as well.
Note that `Action` includes the `layout::SplitSize` structure as a
member. We cannot derive `Eq` here since `SplitSize::Percent(f64)`
cannot satisfy `Eq` because `f64` doesn't implement this. So we add a
new type to hack around this limitation by storing the percentage as
`u64` internally, scaled by a factor of 10 000 and transforming it to
f64 when needed. Refer to the documentation of `layout::Percent` for
further information.
* utils/data: Make `Key` sortable
so the keybindings can be sorted after their keys.
* WIP: utils/input: Make keybinds accessible
when generating `ModeInfo` structs.
* utils/data: Handle unprintable chars in `Key`
when displaying via the `fmt::Display` trait. Handles `\t` and `\n` and
represents them as UTF-8 arrow glyphs.
* HACK: utils/layout: Use u64 for SplitSize::Percent
The previous workaround using a custom `Percent` type fails at the
absolute latest when confronted with user layouts, since these do not
know about the scaling factor and will thus break. It still breaks
currently because `Percent` now expects a u64 (i.e. `50`, not `50.0`)
but this is more easily explained and understood.
* status-bar: Add helper macros
that retrieve the key bound to execute a sequence of `Action` given a
specific Keybinding, and a shorthand that expands to
`Action::SwitchToMode(InputMode::Normal)` used for pattern matching with
the `matches!` macro.
* status-bar/first_line: Get shared superkey if any
from the `ModeKeybindings` in the current `ModeInfo` struct. If the
configured keybindings for switching the modes don't have a superkey in
common, do not print a common prefix.
* status-bar/first_line: Add key to KeyShortcut
which is the key that must be pressed in the current mode to execute the
given shortcut (i.e. switch to the given mode).
* status-bar/first_line: Dynamically set mode binds
Read the keybindings for switching the modes to print in the first line
from the actually configured keybindings for the current mode. Add some
logic to the code that:
- Prints only the "single letter" of the keybinding if all mode-switch
shortcuts *share the same modifier key*,
- Or prints the whole keybinding (with modified) into each segment if
there is no common modifier key.
* status-bar/second_line: Display configured binds
Instead of showing some hard-coded default values. For each mode, reads
the keybindings from the configured keybindings based on some sequence
of action. For example, the keybinding for `New` in the `Pane` menu is
now determined by looking into the configured keybindings and finding
what key is bound to the `Action::NewPane(None)` action.
If no keybinding is found for a given sequence of actions, it will not
show up in the segments either.
* WIP: utils/keybinds: Make key order deterministic
by using a BTreeMap which by default has all of its elements in sorted
order internally. As of currently this doesn't seem to impress the order
in which the keybindings are sent to the plugins, though.
* utils/data: Reorder `Key` variants
to have the Arrow keys sorted as "left", "down", "up", "right" in
accordance with the display in e.g. the status bar.
* status-bar/first_line: Fix inverted `matches!`
when trying to obtain the keybindings to switch between the input modes.
Its initial purpose was to filter out all ' ', '\n' and 'Esc'
keybindings for switching modes (As these are the default and not of
interest for the status bar display), but it was not negated and thus
only filtered out the aforementioned keys.
* status-bar: Don't get all modeswitch keybinds
but only those that are displayed in the status bar. This currently
excludes the keybindings for Entering the Pane/TabRename mode, Tmux mode
and Prompt mode. We must explicitly exclude these since they aren't
bound to the same Modifiers as the regular keys. Thus, if we e.g. enter
Pane or Tab mode, it will pick up the
`SwitchToMode(InputMode::TabRename)` action as being bound to `c`, hence
the `superkey` function cannot find a common modifier, etc. But we don't
display the `TabRename` input mode in the first line anyway, so we must
ignore it.
Therefore, we additionally add the keybinding to call the `Action::Quit`
action to terminate zellij to the vector we return. Also remove the
`(Key, InputMode)` tuple and convert the return type to a plain
`Vec<Key>`, since the never worked with the `InputMode` in the first
place.
* status-bar/first_line: Fix output for tight screen
Implement the "Squeezed" display variant where we do not display which
of the modes each keybinding switches to, but only the keybinding
itself.
* status-bar/second_line: Remove trailing " / "
* status-bar/second-line: Refactor key hints
Instead of determining the appropriate key hints for every case
separately (i.e. enough space to show all, show shortened, shot
best-effort), create a central function that returns for the current
`InputMode` a Vector with tuples of:
- A String to show in full-length mode
- A String to show in shortened/best-effort mode
- The vector of keys that goes with this key hint
This allows all functions that need the hints to iterate over the vector
and pick whatever hint suits them along with the Keys to display.
* status-bar/second-line: Implement shortened hints
* utils/data: Fix display for `Key::Alt`
which previously printed only the internal char but not the modifier.
* status-bar/first-line: Add hidden Tmux tile
that is only shown when in Tmux mode. Note that with the default config
this "breaks" the shared superkey display, because it correctly
identifies that one can switch to Scroll mode via `[`.
* status-bar: Print superkey as part of first line
Instead of first obtaining the superkey and then the rest of the first
line to display. This way we don't need to split up individual data
structures and carry a boolean flag around multiple functions.
It also has the advantage that when the available space is really tight,
the first line is entirely empty and doesn't display a stale superkey
without any other keybinding hints.
* status-bar: Rework keybinding theming
Previously there were individual functions to create the tiles in the
first line depending on whether:
- A tile was selected, unselected, unselected alternate (for theming) or disabled, and
- Tiles had full length or were displayed shortened
In the first case, the functions that previously handled the theming
only differed in what theme they apply to the otherwise identical
content. Since the theming information was drawn from a flat structure
that simulated hierarchy by giving hierarchical names to its theme
"members", this couldn't be handled in code. In the second case, some of
the theming information needed for the full-length shortcuts was
replicated for the shortened shortcuts.
Instead, rewrite the general Theming structure into a hierarchical one:
Adds a new structure `SegmentStyle` that contains the style for a single
segment depending on whether it is selected, unselected (alternate) or
disabled. Refactor the `first-line` module to use a single function to
generate either full-length or shortened tiles, that does functionally
the same but switches themes based on the selection status of the tile
it themes.
* status-bar/second-line: Return new `LinePart`s
from the `add_shortcut` function instead of modifying the input
parameters.
* status-bar/second-line: Implement adaptive behavior
and make the keyhints adapt when the screen runs out of space. The hints
first become shortened and when necessary partially disappear to display
a "..." hint instead.
* status-bar/second-line: Show float pane binding
based on the keycombination that's really bound to switching into the
"Pane" input mode.
* status-bar/get_keys_and_hints: Add more modes
for the keybindings in Tmux and the Pane/TabRename input modes.
* status-bar/second-line: Unify mode handling
and don't do extra shortcut handling for Tmux and the Pane/TabRename
modes any longer. Instead, assemble this like for all other modes from
the keybinding and hints vector.
* status-bar/first-line: Refactor common modifier
to a separate function so it can be used by other modules, too.
* status-bar/second-line: Display modifier in hints
when available. For example, for bindings to move between panes when in
PaneRename mode, now displays "Alt + <hjkl>" instead of
"<Alt+hAlt+j...>".
* utils/ipc: Remove `Copy` from `ClientAttributes`
as preparation to add `Keybinds` as a member to the `ClientAttributes`
struct. `Keybinds` contains a `HashMap`, for which the `std` doesn't
derive `Copy` but only `Clone`.
* utils/input/keybinds: Fix import path
Import `Key` and `InputMode` directly from `data`.
* utils/ipc: Add `Keybinds` to `ClientAttributes`
so we can keep track, pre-client, of the configured key bindings and
pass them around further in the code.
* server/lib: Store `ClientAttributes` over `Style`
in `SessionMetadata` to be able to pass Keybindings to other places in
the code, too. Since `Style` is also a member of `ClientAttributes`,
this works with minimal modifications.
* utils/input: Change `get_mode_info` parameters
to take a `ClientAttributes` struct instead of merely the `Style`
information. This way we can get the `Style` from the
`ClientAttributes`, and also have access to the `keybinds` member that
stores the keybinding configuration.
* utils/ipc: Use `rmp` for serde of IPC messages
instead of `bincode`, which seemingly has issues (de)serializing
`HashMap`s and `BTreeMap`s since `deserialize_any` isn't implemented for
these types.
* fix(nix): remove `assets` from `gitignore`
Remove `assets` from the gitignore of the plugins themselves,
since every single plugin now depends on the asset being accessible
in its source directory.
* tests/e2e: Fix status bar in snapshots
to reflect the current state of the dynamic keybindings.
* status_bar/first_line: Don't show unbound modes
If switching to a specific mode isn't bound to a key, don't show a
tile/ribbon for it either. E.g. in `LOCKED` mode, this will only show
the tile for the `LOCK` mode and ignore all others.
* utils/data: Make 'Key::Char(' ') visible as "␣"
so the user doesn't only see a blank char but has an idea that the space
key is meant.
* status_bar/second_line: Remove extra hints
generated by the `hint_producing_function` that would tell the user in
every input mode how to get back to normal mode. Instead, add this as
keybinding to the general keybindings vector.
This removes some lines of duplicated code but most of all now applies
the correct theming to this keybinding. Additionally, previously the
`RenameTab` and `RenamePane` input modes would show the keybinding to
get back to normal mode twice and both of them were hardcoded. This
binding is now dynamically displayed based on what the user configured
as keybinding.
* utils/data: format unprintable chars as words
instead of unicode symbols. E.g. write "SPACE" instead of "␣".
* utils/data: Fix display for `Ctrl`/`Alt` keys
previously their "inner" chars would be displayed with a regular
`fmt::Display` for the `&str` type they are. This doesn't match what we
want to output. So instead we wrap the inner chars into `Key::Char`
before printing them.
* utils/data: Change order of `Key`s
so that e.g. for the default bindings in `Scroll` mode we prefer to show
`PgDn|PgUp` rather than the arrow keys these actions are bound to as
well.
* status_bar/first_line: Don't ignore default char
bindings by default. These include the '\n', ' ' and 'Esc' bindings that
by default lead back to `Normal` input mode from all the modes.
Previously we would unconditionally ignore them and consequently not
print the tile when in fact the user may have bound this particular
action to either of the keys.
Instead now we first ignore the keys mentioned and if we turn up with an
undefined binding, we consider these default keys as well so we get
*something* to display in any case.
* status_bar/first_line: Add space when no modifier
is shared between the keybindings. This way there isn't a stray arrow at
the very border of the screen, but it is spaced just like the tab-bar
and the second line is.
* status_bar/second_line: Print separators
between consecutive keys bound to specific actions. This allows the user
to visually differ between different keys.
* status_bar/main: Don't return modifier if empty
* status_bar/first_line: Don't suppress Disabled tiles
Disabled is a special state that the keybindings only assume in locked
mode. It turns the respective tiles grey to signal to the user that
these are currently inactive. With respect to users new to zellij, it
may appear confusing that when entering locked mode all the other tiles
disappear (which they do because they have no valid keybinding
assigned). Since we have no keybinding for them, we still display them
but without any associated key (i.e. as `<>` for the binding).
* status_bar/first_line: Don't print leading triangle
on first tile, when there is no shared superkey.
* status_bar/second_line: Add exceptions
for inter-key separators. Keeps groups of `hjkl` and arrow keys intact
(doesn't add separators between the keys) but separates all others.
* status_bar/main: Refactor `action_key`
to a regular function instead of a macro. It turns out that while being
able to match patterns is a nice feature, we completely rely on the keys
that drop out of the pattern found this way to be sorted in a sensible
way. Since we sort the key vectors in the necessary places after the
keys, and not the actions, this of course doesn't apply when the user
changes "hjkl" to "zjkl", which would then become "jklz". Now this is of
course wrong, because "z" still means "Move focus left", and not "Move
focus right".
With the function we now assume a slice of Actions that we match the
action vectors from the keybindings against to obtain the necessary
keys. In order to avoid ugly `into_iter().chain(...)` constructs we had
before we also add a new function `action_key_group` that takes a sliced
array of slices to get a whole group of keys to display.
* status_bar/first_line: Fix "triangle" for short tiles
since we do not want to display a colored triangle at the start of the
line when in sortened mode (just as we do for the long tiles now).
Also fix a bug that would make the triangle reappear when the first
keybinding to be displayed didn't have a key assigned and thus wouldn't
be displayed at all.
* status_bar/second_line: Fix typo
that would cause single `Ctrl+?` bindings for actions in the second line
to be displayed as `Ctrl + <Ctrl+?>`.
* status_bar/second_line: Fix char count
when displaying groups of keys in a binding with or without a separator.
* status_bar: Use new `action_key` fn
instead of the previous macro to obtain the keys to display in the
status bar in a fixed given order. Also fix the display "bug" where tab
switching would be shows as "ArrowLeft/ArrowDown" instead of
"ArrowLeft/ArrowRight".
* status_bar/second_line: Fix floating pane hint
that tells the user what keybinding to press to suppress the currently
active floating panes. This was previously hardcoded.
* utils: Send full keybinds in `ModeInfo`
instead of the currently active `ModeKeybinds` for the active input
mode. Some of the UI issues cannot be solved without having access to
*all* keybindings.
* utils: Refactor keybinds vec into type
to make clippy happy.
* status_bar/first_line: Remove needless borrows
* status_bar: Factor out printing keybindings
into a separate function that takes a vector of keys and a palette and
returns the painted key groups, with correct inter-character separation
where necessary and factoring out common modifier keys.
* status_bar/tip: Use real keybindings
instead of printing hard-coded messages to the user.
* status_bar: abort early when keyvector is empty
in `style_key_with_modifier`.
* status_bar/tip: Fix all keybindings
and make them dynamic given the keybindings really active in the current
session. Also display **UNBOUND** is some keybinding is missing from the
users config.
* status_bar: Go clippy!
* status_bar: Add documentation
and add a new exception group to `action_key_group` that ensures that
`hl` and `jk` won't be separated with `|`.
* status_bar/tip: Detect when key aren't bound
correctly and show "UNBOUND" as keyhint instead, then. Previously we
would only check the length of the whole keybinding segment, but that
isn't a good indicator since most of the bindings require changing modes
first, which already adds a variable number of letters to the segment.
However, there is not point in showing how to get to a certain mode, if
the binding needed in that mode doesn't exist.
* status_bar/first_line: Show bindings when locked
if the user has any configured.
* status_bar: Don't consider 'hl', 'jk' groups
that don't need a separator in between the letters.
* status_bar/second_line: Add "search" keybindings
for the new Search functionality.
* tests/e2e: Fix snapshots
with what the status bar now really displays.
* status_bar: Remove old comments
* status_bar/first_line: Rename 'long_tile'
to the more descriptive name 'mode_shortcut', which better describes
what this function does.
* status_bar/first_line: Fix spacing in simple UI
where the modifier would be shows as `Ctrl +`, without a trailing space.
This isn't an issue in regular mode, where we have the spacing from the
arrow gaps (`>>`) that "simulates" this effect.
* status_bar: Refactor and rename `ctrl_keys`
so it doesn't rely on some "external" index for operation any more.
* status_bar: Add unit tests to shared functions
and fix a bug in the process where certain `Ctrl` keybindings would be
displayed wrong.
* status_bar/first_line: Rename functions
responsible for printing the long and short shortcut keyhint tiles. Also
add some documentation that explains their purpose and the arguments
they accept.
* status_bar/tips: Remove stray "/" in quicknav tip
* utils/layout: Remove old comments
introduced when rewriting `SplitSize::Percent` to not hold an `f64`
type.
* status_bar: Add "regex" as test dependency
We use regular expressions to strip all ANSI escape sequences in the
strings that are produced by the plugin functions during testing. We do
not test for the style information, but merely for the raw text.
* status_bar: Implement unit tests
* Makefile: Always run tests on host triple
This allows the unit tests for all plugins to be run on the host as well
(because their default compilation target is wasm32-wasi).
* tests/e2e: Add test for custom bindings
in the status bar. Makes sure that the modified bindings from a custom
configuration file are read and applied to the UI.

* feat(plugins-manifest): Add a plugins manifest to allow for more configuration of plugins
* refactor(plugins-manifest): Better storage of plugin metadata in wasm_vm
* fix(plugins-manifest): Inherit permissions from run configuration
* refactor(plugins-manifest): Rename things for more clarity
- The Plugins/Plugin structs had "Config" appended to them to clarify
that they're metadata about plugins, and not the plugins themselves.
- The PluginType::OncePerPane variant was renamed to be just
PluginType::Pane, and the documentation clarified to explain what it
is.
- The "service" nomenclature was completely removed in favor of
"headless".
* refactor(plugins-manifest): Move security warning into start plugin
* refactor(plugins-manifest): Remove hack in favor of standard method
* refactor(plugins-manifest): Change display of plugin location
The only time that a plugin location is displayed in Zellij is the
border of the pane. Having `zellij:strider` display instead of just
`strider` was a little annoying, so we're stripping out the scheme
information from a locations display.
* refactor(plugins-manifest): Add a little more documentation
* fix(plugins-manifest): Formatting

fixes #603, fixes #349
* The layout has now a unique `tabs` section,
that can be used, like the `parts` section,
everything that is not inside the tabs section
is assumed to be present on every single tab
that is opened.
This is a BREAKING CHANGE for people that use
custom `layouts` already, since the `tabs` section
is not optional - for clarity and intentionality reasons.
The functionality to specify multiple tabs is already there,
but is still gated behind a panic, until #621 is fixed.
So for now one tab can be specified to load on startup.
* The `NewTab` action can optionally be bound to open
a layout that is assumed to be in the new `tabs` section
This is a BREAKING CHANGE for people that have the
`NewTab` action already bound in the config file:
```
- action: [NewTab, ]
key: [F: 5,]
```
must now be specified as:
```
- action: [NewTab: ,]
key: [F: 5,]
```
Optionally a layout that should be opened on the new tab can be
specified:
```
- action: [NewTab: {
direction: Vertical,
parts: [ {direction: Horizontal, split_size: {Percent: 50}}, {direction: Horizontal, run: {command: {cmd: "htop"}}},],
key: [F: 6,]
```
or:
```
- action: [NewTab: {direction: Vertical, run: {command: {cmd: "htop"} }},]
key: [F: 7,]
```
or
```
- action: [NewTab: {
direction: Vertical,
parts: [ {direction: Vertical, split_size: {Percent: 25},run: {plugin: "strider" }}, {direction: Horizontal}],}, MoveFocus: Left,]
key: [F: 8,]
```
